Working for a newspaper as I do means these are uncertain times for me and my co-workers. One never knows when further cutbacks will be coming, and that makes those of us working for the print media waiting for the next changes to take place.

One of the biggest newspaper/communication companies in the country has announced layoffs. You can check the story from the Fairfield Sun Times below:

>>Gannett Announces Newspaper Layoffs

Bob Dickey, President of Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing Division, announced today in a confidential company memo that the divison was cutting its’ workforce by 2%.

The Sun Times has obtained a copy of the memo, which was posted on an unofficial employee blog.

The move is expected to affect 700 workers at the company’s newspaper operations across the nation.

This is the largest layoff by the media giant since 2009, when 1400 jobs were cut.   This will make the 4th round of cuts since 2008.

By mid-day it was revealed that the Gannett paper in Cincinnati, OH had cut at least 15 workers; The Indianapolis Star had let 11 employees go.  In Phoenix, AZ, the Publisher of the Arizona Republic announced the shutdown of the Phoenix Offset plant in Chandler. The plant was one of several USA Today print facilities.  That closure will put 40 workers in the unemployment lines.

Gannett has over 32,000 employees worldwide, 22,000 work in U.S. newspapers.  Gannett operates the Great Falls Tribune.

Does this mean re-training? Moving into a new field? For many, it will. And this is a tough time to transition into another line of work.

I don’t know if this helps, but here’s a recently released Gannett video about the company:
