It’s amazing what some people will do sometimes! Check out this story from CBS3.com:

>>Philadelphia Police are searching for the heartless thief who stole a wheelchair and a dog from a man who suffers from cerebral palsy.

The shocking theft happened at about 11 a.m. Thursday outside a convenience store located at 27th and Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia. Warren Lloyd parked his motorized wheelchair outside the Yoscar Mini Market and went inside to get a sandwich. His dog was in a carrying case on the back of the wheelchair. In the time it took Lloyd to go inside and pay for his food, the thief struck and made off with Lloyd’s wheelchair and his dog. View full article »

One of the tough things about working for a publication that comes out every day of the year is that your schedule may have to be flexible to keep working there.

In the last couple of years, I’ve worked Monday through Friday, then spent about a year working Sunday through Thursday, then another year working Tuesday through Saturday.

So, today is Friday. As far as my work goes, is it Thursday? Or is it Saturday? Or could it even really be Friday? I get so confused!

It’s not like I haven’t worked for places that didn’t require shift changes before. I worked for a hospital in Florida that provided the same challenges. When I was employed there, I worked days, nights and in-between … including double shifts. It was a rare and wonderful thing when I had two days off together that I didn’t specifically request. What a treat!

A Message To Mom

Since today is Mother’s Day, I thought I would honor my Mom’s memory by writing her a letter. I hope you can also find something of value in it as well. And Happy Mother’s Day to each and every Mom!

Dear Mom:

I miss you. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly two years since you’ve been gone. Sometimes it feels like two decades. You told me once that nothing stays the same forever and, as always, you were right.

I see you and the house the way it used to be in my dreams. You still have that wonderful smile and the kind, soft, gentle words you always said. I remember that the only time anyone ever heard loud noise coming from our house was when we were laughing. View full article »

Rusty looked just like this when he was little. What a cutie! My sister used to have a dog named Rusty. He was mostly a miniature Terrier, but he was the smartest and most human dog I have ever met. If he would see me playing with another dog, he wouldn’t look angry–no, he’d look at me with eyes that let me know just how much I had disappointed him. “You’re mine!” he seemed to be trying to say. “Why are you spending time with that other dog?” My mom kept a wonderful photo of him on her kitchen table. I nicknamed him “Rustoleum” after something my dad kept in the cellar that I never quite understood.

When the world is dark and work doesn’t go well and life overall is haywire, a pet, including dogs and cats, can put a smile back on your face. You walk in the door, and they don’t care if you’ve gained weight or got the boss mad or had a flat tire. They just love you. “I’m so glad you’re home!” they seem to be saying. “Spend time with me!” And they know just how to distract you from the cares of the day.

WayneWhere this blog will go, nobody knows–not even me! I’ll probably just start out with some personal thoughts, then go more into my areas of interest, which hopefully others will enjoy as well!

Thanks to Ian Cullen at scifipulse.net for helping me learn WordPress and giving me the opportunities to help with the site and with the podcast. Thanks to Scott Klein for setting the blog up and for answering my questions!

With the advent of May, I’ll be back to working Monday-Friday, which will be nice. I’ve missed getting together with the club on Saturdays. My hours will change to 2 to 10 p.m., which will give me a schedule closer to “reality,” as it were. Not that I minded working the days and hours that others would prefer not to–I enjoy being flexible. But since the passing of my mother back in October of 2008, life has been decidedly different. And all the things I’ve gone through have been educational, but also difficult. I’ve got to get back on track financially. I’ll get back to a level playing field soon.
