I don’t have any children, so I can’t really throw any stones, but the irony in this is rather pronounced. Here’s where I located the story:
CHARLEROI, Pa. — Police said charges are pending after a 2-year-old was found without shoes or a jacket wandering down a Washington County street Wednesday.
Charleroi police said a neighbor spotted the toddler walking down Washington Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday.
“He kind of just came up to me, and I picked him up, asked him where he lives and he was kind of too little to say anything,” Robin Stasicha said.
Investigators said the child’s mother was attending a parenting class when the incident occurred.
The child’s mother told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that she was not neglectful of her children and that she left them in the care of her fiancĂ©’s father and his 20-year-old daughter.
“I am about my children. I’m not about hitting, smacking, or leaving my children in the roads,” the mother said. Charleroi police told Channel 4 Action News’ Amber Nicotra that 20-year-old Jessica Devore and 59-year-old Elmer Devore will be charged in connection with the case.
Police said it’s likely that charges won’t be filed against the mother, but they are still investigating.
Nicotra reported that police said the mother left her two children in the care of the Devores while she went to take court-ordered parenting classes. The mother told investigators that she believed the pair was capable of watching her children.
However, police said that when they questioned Jessica and Elmer Devore after the boy was found in the street, neither one knew the boy’s name.
Police said the pair was deemed incapable of caring for the children and the toddler and the 4-month-old were taken into the custody of Washington County Children and Youth Services.
The mother said this isn’t the first time her son opened the front door and wandered out alone.
“He has gone out my apartment door and is constantly going to my mom’s next door; back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And you can’t childproof a house, because you’re either under Section 8 or you’re not allowed to put screws in,” she said.
“It was my mistake, but that does not qualify me for losing my children because of that,” she said.<<
I often have to say that I simply couldn’t make this stuff up!
