Way To Go, Joe!

It’s been a while since I’ve highlighted my joys in music. Since I’ve just discovered a great musician who has a very interesting story, I thought I’d point him and his music out today.

I’ve mentioned previously how much I love piano music. There’s something very special about a person and an instrument making gorgeous music together. That’s not to say I don’t like bands or orchestras–I do! But in the last few years, I’ve come to appreciate music that has an “earnestness” to it. By that I mean, it isn’t just elevator music that trundles along with no purpose but to provide a background noise. No, this music has real feeling to it–it can make me swoon or dance or reflect on life in general.

Of course, the musicians I’ve listed previously include Jim Brickman, Jim Chappell and Bryce Miller, among others. But today, thanks to the Internet, I discovered a new favorite–Joe Bongiorno.

Now where I come from, in Northeastern Pennsylvania, a guy with that name would have to run a pizza parlor. And the pizza would taste great, too, by the way. Then, too, to look at a photo of Joe, one might think he resembles a fullback more than a musician, like he ought to tackle the piano instead of play it. But things don’t just end there. (And his story reminds me of my experience with my father as well.)

A Message To Mom

Since today is Mother’s Day, I thought I would honor my Mom’s memory by writing her a letter. I hope you can also find something of value in it as well. And Happy Mother’s Day to each and every Mom!

Dear Mom:

I miss you. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly two years since you’ve been gone. Sometimes it feels like two decades. You told me once that nothing stays the same forever and, as always, you were right.

I see you and the house the way it used to be in my dreams. You still have that wonderful smile and the kind, soft, gentle words you always said. I remember that the only time anyone ever heard loud noise coming from our house was when we were laughing. View full article »

MusicOne of the things I enjoy doing most is making my own “mixes” of music, and I usually do that by a theme. For instance, I have ten playlists of holiday/Christmas music, nine of pop songs I like, favorites of performers I particularly enjoy, Halloween and patriotic music.

It’s Raining Again is in my “Stormy/Rainy Weather” list. And as I write this, it is raining outside.

Currently, my favorite artists include Enya, Jim Brickman, Jim Chappell, Jon Schmidt, Mannheim Steamroller, David Lanz and Bryce Miller. I have always enjoyed what is now called “New Age,” so I listen to a lot of piano and vocal songs these days. I used to enjoy pop, but I don’t see many new songs I like by artists I prefer coming out these days. So I depend on the web and Facebook to keep me up to date on my guys and gals.
